Balkans to the Alps

A photographic journey from the historic cities and landscapes of the Balkans northward through Central Europe to the alpine regions of the Austrian Alps.

This itinerary follows a route across southeastern and central Europe, beginning in the historic regions of the Balkans and continuing north through the landscapes and cities shaped by centuries of cultural exchange. The journey passes through countries where Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Habsburg influences have left a lasting imprint on architecture, cities, and historic monuments.

Along the route the photographs document medieval fortresses, historic town centers, mountain landscapes, and river valleys that form the geographic backbone of the region. From the rugged mountains of the Balkans to the elegant cities of Central Europe and the dramatic alpine scenery of Austria, the journey traces a corridor where diverse cultures and landscapes meet.

The journey begins in the historic cities of the Balkan Peninsula, where ancient fortresses, Ottoman-era towns, and mountain landscapes reflect centuries of regional history. From there the route continues north across the Danube Basin, linking historic capitals and cultural centers of Central Europe.

The itinerary then enters the foothills of the Eastern Alps, where the landscape gradually rises into alpine valleys, mountain lakes, and historic towns surrounded by dramatic peaks. The journey concludes within the Austrian Alps, where towering mountains, glacial valleys, and traditional alpine villages mark the final stage of the route.
