Split – Croatia

Split lies along the Dalmatian coast of the Adriatic Sea, backed by the mountains of the Croatian mainland and facing a chain of offshore islands. The city grew around the remarkable remains of Diocletian’s Palace, a vast Roman imperial complex built in the late 3rd and early 4th centuries AD.

Over the centuries the palace gradually transformed into a living city, with houses, shops, and streets occupying the original Roman walls and courtyards. Today the historic center of Split forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where Roman architecture blends with medieval and Renaissance buildings.

The city’s waterfront promenade, known as the Riva, provides views across the harbor toward the Adriatic islands, making Split one of the most vibrant and historically significant cities along the Croatian coast.
