Durmitor National Park – Montenegro
Durmitor National Park lies in the mountainous interior of northern Montenegro, where the Dinaric Alps rise dramatically above deep river canyons and high alpine plateaus. The park is known for its rugged limestone peaks, glacial lakes, and vast forests that form one of the most striking natural landscapes in the Balkans.
One of the park’s most remarkable features is the Tara River Canyon, which cuts through the mountains to form one of the deepest river gorges in Europe. Elsewhere within the park, glacial lakes known locally as “mountain eyes” reflect the surrounding peaks and forests.
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Durmitor preserves a wilderness landscape shaped by glaciers, rivers, and centuries of pastoral life in Montenegro’s high mountains.
