UNESCO: Historic Centre of the City of Salzburg

Franziskanerkirche – Salzburg, Austria

The Franziskanerkirche (Franciscan Church) stands just a short distance from Salzburg Cathedral within the historic center of the city. Originally built during the Romanesque period, the church was later expanded with Gothic architectural elements that give the interior its tall, elegant proportions.

The nave features slender Gothic columns and a soaring ceiling that contrasts with the simpler Romanesque design of the earlier structure. Over the centuries the church became closely associated with the Franciscan order, which has maintained a presence here for hundreds of years.

Today the church remains an important religious and historic landmark within Salzburg’s old town.
