Impenetrable Forest and the Serengeti

A journey through the rainforests and savannas of East Africa, from the mountain gorilla habitat of Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest to the vast wildlife plains of the Serengeti.

This itinerary explores some of the most remarkable wildlife landscapes in East Africa, beginning in the dense mountain rainforest of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda and continuing across the vast savannas of Tanzania’s Serengeti ecosystem. These regions are among the most biologically rich environments on the African continent and provide refuge for some of the world’s most iconic wildlife species.

In Bwindi’s steep forested mountains, rare mountain gorillas live within one of the oldest surviving rainforests in Africa. The journey then moves south and east into the open grasslands of Tanzania, where enormous herds of wildebeest, zebras, and antelope migrate across the plains of the Serengeti.

Together these landscapes represent two dramatically different African ecosystems — dense equatorial rainforest and expansive savanna — each supporting extraordinary biodiversity.

The journey begins in southwestern Uganda, where the rugged slopes of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest shelter one of the last remaining populations of mountain gorillas. Trekking through dense jungle vegetation reveals a landscape largely unchanged for thousands of years.

From there the itinerary moves south into Tanzania, where the environment opens into the sweeping plains of the Serengeti. Here vast grasslands support some of the largest wildlife populations in the world, including lions, elephants, giraffes, and the great herds that participate in the annual Great Migration.

The route connects two of Africa’s most extraordinary natural environments, highlighting both the biodiversity of the rainforest and the dramatic wildlife spectacles of the savanna.
