Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – Uganda
The Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary lies north of Kampala along the route toward Murchison Falls National Park. Established in 2005, the sanctuary was created as part of an effort to reintroduce white rhinoceroses to Uganda after the species had disappeared from the country due to poaching and conflict.
The protected reserve provides a safe habitat where rhinos can live and reproduce under careful conservation management. Visitors often track the animals on foot with trained guides, offering a rare opportunity to observe these massive animals up close in their natural environment.
The sanctuary plays an important role in the long-term effort to restore Uganda’s rhino population.
Overview
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary offers one of the most intimate wildlife experiences in Uganda — a rare opportunity to encounter white rhinos on foot in an open landscape shaped by conservation and recovery.
Unlike traditional safari parks, Ziwa is quieter and more grounded. The experience begins along dusty roads and village edges before transitioning into protected savannah, where wildlife appears gradually and often at close range.

Field Guide
📍 Location
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is located in northern Uganda, along the main route between Kampala and Murchison Falls National Park.
🦏 Wildlife
The sanctuary is home to Uganda’s only population of wild white rhinos. Other wildlife includes vervet monkeys, bushbuck, waterbuck, warthogs, and a variety of bird species such as marabou storks.
🌿 Landscape
The terrain consists of open savannah, scattered woodland, and dry forest patches. The environment feels accessible and grounded, with wildlife often encountered near roads and walking paths.
📅 Best Time to Visit
Wildlife viewing is consistent year-round. Early morning and late afternoon provide the best light and more active animal behavior.
🚙 Access
Ziwa is typically reached by road as part of a journey to or from Murchison Falls. Guided walking safaris are required to approach rhinos.
📸 Photography Notes
- Excellent opportunities for close-range wildlife photography
- Soft natural light works well in early morning and late afternoon
- Mid-range zoom lenses (70–200mm) are ideal for most encounters
- Watch for dust and heat distortion during midday
Experience
The experience begins on the road — passing through rural landscapes where cattle, villages, and wildlife overlap. Vervet monkeys appear along the roadside, and signage hints at what lies ahead.
Entering the sanctuary shifts the atmosphere. Dirt tracks lead deeper into protected land, where the pace slows and attention sharpens. Encounters build gradually — first birds and antelope, then signs of larger wildlife.
The first sighting of a rhino is unmistakable. Large, deliberate, and completely at ease in the grass, they move with a quiet confidence. Approaching on foot changes the dynamic entirely — distance disappears, and every movement feels immediate.
Time with the rhinos unfolds slowly. Grazing, feeding, and subtle interactions become the focus, revealing behavior that would be missed from a vehicle. The experience is less about action and more about presence.
Beyond the rhinos, the sanctuary offers a broader ecosystem — giraffe in open woodland, antelope at the forest edge, and birdlife scattered throughout the landscape. These moments add context and balance to the experience.
By the time you leave, the impression is not just of the animals, but of the setting itself — a place where conservation, landscape, and everyday life intersect.
