Kilimanjaro

UNESCO: Kilimanjaro National Park

Mount Kilimanjaro – Tanzania

Mount Kilimanjaro rises from the plains of northern Tanzania near the border with Kenya and is the highest mountain in Africa, reaching an elevation of 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). The mountain is actually a dormant volcanic massif composed of three volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira.

Because of its immense height, Kilimanjaro contains several distinct ecological zones ranging from tropical forest at its base to alpine desert and glacial ice near the summit. Snow-capped peaks rising above the African savanna create one of the most iconic landscapes on the continent.

Kilimanjaro remains one of the most recognizable natural landmarks in Africa and an important symbol of Tanzania.
