Rotterdam – Netherlands

The city of Rotterdam lies along the Nieuwe Maas River, one of the main branches of the Rhine–Meuse river delta. Because of its strategic access to the North Sea, Rotterdam developed into one of the largest and busiest ports in the world.

Much of the historic city was destroyed during the bombing of 1940 in World War II. In the decades that followed, Rotterdam rebuilt itself with bold modern architecture, giving the city one of the most contemporary skylines in Europe.

Today Rotterdam combines its role as a global shipping hub with innovative urban design and waterfront development.
