Regensburg lies along the Danube River in eastern Bavaria and is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Germany. Founded as a Roman settlement known as Castra Regina, the city later became an important center of trade and political life within the Holy Roman Empire.
The historic old town contains a remarkable collection of medieval buildings, narrow streets, and stone towers that reflect its prosperity during the Middle Ages. One of the city’s most famous landmarks is the Stone Bridge, built in the 12th century to span the Danube and serve as a vital crossing for merchants and travelers.
Today the historic center of Regensburg is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
