Zitouna Grand Mosque – Tunis, Tunisia
The Zitouna Mosque, often called the Zitouna Grand Mosque, stands at the heart of the historic Medina of Tunis. Founded in the 8th century, it is the oldest and most important mosque in the city.
For centuries the mosque served not only as a place of worship but also as a major center of Islamic learning and scholarship in North Africa. Students from across the region came to study theology, law, and Arabic literature within its courtyards.
The mosque’s arcaded courtyard and elegant minaret remain key landmarks within the dense urban fabric of the medina.
