UNESCO: Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica

Syracuse – Sicily, Italy

The ancient city of Syracuse, known in antiquity as Syracusa, was one of the most powerful Greek cities of the Mediterranean world. Founded by Greek settlers in the 8th century BCE, the city became a major cultural and political center during the classical period.

The historic island district of Ortigia preserves many of the city’s most important monuments, including ancient temples, medieval streets, and Baroque palaces. Among the highlights is the Cathedral of Syracuse, built upon the remains of an ancient Greek temple.

Syracuse’s long history and extraordinary archaeological remains make it one of Sicily’s most significant historic destinations.
