UNESCO: Archaeological Site of Aigai

Royal Tombs of Aigai (Vergina) – Greece

The remarkable burial complex of the Royal Tombs of Aigai lies beneath a large earthen mound near the modern town of Vergina in northern Greece. Ancient Aigai served as the first capital of the Macedonian kingdom.

In 1977, archaeologists uncovered a series of royal tombs containing extraordinary treasures, including gold funerary objects, weapons, armor, and ceremonial artifacts. One of the tombs is widely believed to belong to Philip II of Macedon, the father of Alexander the Great.

Today the site is preserved within an underground museum that protects the tombs and displays the remarkable artifacts discovered within them. The Archaeological Site of Aigai stands as one of the most important archaeological discoveries related to ancient Macedonia.
