Fountains Abbey – North Yorkshire, England
Fountains Abbey lies in the valley of the River Skell within the landscaped grounds of Studley Royal Park in North Yorkshire, England. Founded in 1132, the abbey became one of the most prosperous Cistercian monasteries in medieval England.
Today the extensive stone ruins of the abbey stand among peaceful parkland and wooded valleys, creating one of the most impressive monastic landscapes in Britain. The towering remains of the church, cloisters, and monastic buildings reflect the scale and influence of the abbey during the Middle Ages.
The abbey and surrounding park are now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving both the medieval ruins and the elegant 18th-century landscape gardens that surround them.
