The immense cascade of Victoria Falls ranks among the most spectacular waterfalls on Earth. Located along the Zambezi River, the falls form the natural boundary between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Stretching more than a kilometer across, the curtain of water plunges into a deep gorge below, sending enormous clouds of mist high into the air. The falls were famously documented by the explorer David Livingstone in the 19th century, who named them in honor of Queen Victoria.

Known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, meaning “The Smoke That Thunders,” Victoria Falls remains one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders.

Victoria Falls lies along the Zambezi River at the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. The river forms a natural boundary between the two countries before plunging into a deep basalt gorge that continues downstream through a series of zigzagging chasms.

The falls were formed as the Zambezi River eroded softer rock between harder basalt layers, gradually carving a dramatic drop. Over long periods of time, the waterfall has shifted upstream as erosion continues to cut new channels through the rock.

The present waterfall spans roughly 1.7 kilometers (about one mile) in width, with water dropping more than 100 meters (over 300 feet) into the gorge below.

Local communities have known the falls for centuries, referring to them as Mosi-oa-Tunya, often translated as “The Smoke That Thunders.” The name reflects the towering columns of mist visible from miles away and the constant roar produced by the falling water.

In 1855, explorer David Livingstone documented the falls during his travels along the Zambezi River, bringing broader international awareness to the site.
