Chinchero – Sacred Valley, Peru
The Andean village of Chinchero sits high above the Sacred Valley at an elevation of more than 3,700 meters. The settlement was an important center during the time of the Inca Empire and later became a colonial town during the Spanish period.
At the center of the village stands a colonial church built upon the foundations of an Inca palace complex, illustrating the layered history of the region. The surrounding terraces and fields reflect traditional agricultural practices that continue to this day.
Chinchero is also known for its vibrant textile traditions, where local artisans weave colorful fabrics using techniques passed down for generations.
