Cathedral of Monreale – Sicily, Italy
The magnificent Monreale Cathedral stands above the city of Monreale overlooking the valley of Palermo. Constructed in the late 12th century during the reign of the Norman kings of Sicily, the cathedral represents one of the greatest achievements of Norman architecture in Italy.
The interior is famous for its vast golden mosaics that cover the walls and ceilings, depicting scenes from the Old and New Testaments. These mosaics form one of the largest and most impressive Byzantine-style decorative programs in the world.
Because of its extraordinary artistic significance, the cathedral is recognized as part of the Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale.
