Pisa – Tuscany, Italy
The historic city of Pisa stands along the Arno River in the region of Tuscany. During the medieval period Pisa grew into one of the great maritime republics of Italy, rivaling cities such as Venice and Genoa in trade and naval power.
The city’s most famous landmark is the Leaning Tower of Pisa, part of the cathedral complex located in the Piazza dei Miracoli. Built as the bell tower for the cathedral, the structure became famous for its distinctive tilt caused by unstable ground beneath its foundation.
Together the cathedral, baptistery, and tower form one of Italy’s most celebrated architectural ensembles.
