Luxembourg City – Luxembourg
Luxembourg City stands at the confluence of the Alzette and Pétrusse Rivers in a landscape of deep valleys and steep cliffs. Because of its strategic location, the city developed into one of the most heavily fortified cities in Europe.
For centuries Luxembourg’s powerful defensive walls and bastions earned it the nickname “Gibraltar of the North.” Although many of the fortifications were dismantled in the 19th century, impressive sections of the defensive system still remain.
The historic old town and surviving fortifications of Luxembourg City are today recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A narrow palace entrance is closed by an ornate wrought-iron gate crowned with Luxembourg's red lion on a blue-and-white striped shield. Gilded scrollwork and a royal crown frame the heraldic device, while stone gateposts and the palace's small turreted passage create an intimate ceremonial approach rather than a monumental forecourt.
