Alexander Nevsky Cathedral – Sofia, Bulgaria
The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral stands at the heart of Sofia and is one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches in the world. Built in the early 20th century, the cathedral was constructed as a memorial to Russian soldiers who died during the Russo–Turkish War of 1877–1878, which led to Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule.
The cathedral’s massive copper-clad domes rise above a broad public square in the historic center of the city. Its architecture blends Neo-Byzantine and Orthodox traditions, with richly decorated façades, arched colonnades, and a towering central dome visible from across Sofia.
Inside, the cathedral contains elaborate mosaics, marble columns, and religious icons that reflect the deep traditions of Eastern Orthodox art and worship.
