Wawel Castle, Krakow, Poland

Wawel Castle – Kraków

Wawel Castle rises above the Vistula River on a limestone hill at the southern edge of Kraków’s old town. For centuries this hill served as the political and ceremonial center of the Polish state, where kings were crowned and buried.

The castle complex includes a series of Renaissance courtyards, defensive walls, and royal chambers surrounding the hilltop plateau. Adjacent to the castle stands Wawel Cathedral, whose towers and domes mark the burial place of many of Poland’s monarchs and national heroes.

From the terraces along Wawel Hill, views extend across the Vistula River and the rooftops of Kraków’s historic center, illustrating why this elevated site has served as the symbolic heart of Poland for more than a thousand years.
