Agrigento – Sicily, Italy
The ancient city of Agrigento stands along the southern coast of Sicily and was originally founded by Greek settlers in the 6th century BCE. Known in antiquity as Akragas, the city became one of the most prosperous and influential Greek colonies in the Mediterranean.
Nearby lies the famous Valley of the Temples, where a series of monumental Doric temples were constructed during the height of the Greek city’s power. These temples remain among the most impressive examples of Greek architecture outside mainland Greece.
Today the archaeological park preserves the remains of this once-great classical city.
The Temple of Concordia stands nearly complete at the end of the approach, its six-column Doric façade, triangular pediment, and surrounding colonnade sharply defined beneath gathering clouds. The low viewpoint includes the curving path and rocky foreground, allowing the temple's balanced proportions and exceptional preservation to dominate the scene. Few monuments at ancient Akragas retain so much of their original architectural envelope.
