Wismar – Germany

The coastal city of Wismar lies along the Baltic Sea in northern Germany and was another important member of the Hanseatic League. During the Middle Ages the city flourished as a trading port connecting merchants across northern Europe.

Wismar’s historic center features broad market squares, Gothic brick churches, and colorful merchant houses that reflect its Hanseatic prosperity. Landmarks such as St. George’s Church, St. Mary’s Church, and the large central marketplace illustrate the scale and importance of the medieval city.

Today the historic old town of Wismar, together with nearby Stralsund, forms a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognized for its well-preserved Hanseatic architecture.
