Stirling Heads – Stirling Castle, Scotland
The remarkable carved figures known as the Stirling Heads decorate the ceilings of the royal palace within Stirling Castle. These wooden roundels were created during the 16th century for the palace of James V of Scotland.
Each carved head represents figures from history, mythology, and royal courts, reflecting the Renaissance artistic influences that reached Scotland during the reign of James V. The originals were carefully preserved and replaced with replicas within the palace.
Together the Stirling Heads form one of the finest surviving examples of Renaissance woodcarving in Britain.
