Birdoswald and Steel Rigg – Hadrian’s Wall, England

The landscapes around Birdoswald Roman Fort and Steel Rigg form one of the most dramatic sections of Hadrian’s Wall in northern England. Constructed during the 2nd century CE under the Roman emperor Hadrian, the wall once stretched nearly 120 kilometers across northern Britain.

Birdoswald preserves the remains of a Roman fort that housed soldiers guarding this northern frontier of the Roman Empire. Nearby at Steel Rigg, the wall follows a dramatic ridge of hills offering sweeping views across the surrounding countryside.

Today the site forms part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire.
