UNESCO: Venice and its Lagoon

Rialto – Venice, Italy

The historic Rialto Bridge spans the Grand Canal and stands as one of the most recognizable landmarks in Venice. Completed in 1591, the elegant stone bridge replaced earlier wooden crossings and became the principal connection between the commercial districts on either side of the canal.

For centuries the surrounding area formed the economic heart of Venice, where merchants traded goods arriving from across the Mediterranean and beyond. Shops built directly along the bridge continue the long tradition of commerce in this historic marketplace.

Today the Rialto Bridge remains one of the most iconic architectural symbols of Venice.
