Port Arthur – Tasmania, Australia
The historic site of Port Arthur Historic Site stands along the remote Tasman Peninsula in southeastern Tasmania. Established during the 19th century, Port Arthur served as one of the most important penal colonies in the British Empire.
Convicts transported from Britain were sent here to work in harsh conditions while constructing buildings and infrastructure throughout the settlement. Today the preserved ruins of prisons, churches, and other structures offer a powerful glimpse into this chapter of colonial history.
Port Arthur is recognized as part of the Australian Convict Sites.
