Palamidi Fortress – Nafplio, Greece
The imposing Palamidi Fortress rises high above the coastal town of Nafplio overlooking the Argolic Gulf. Built by the Venetians in the early 18th century, the fortress formed part of a network of defenses protecting the region during periods of conflict between European powers and the Ottoman Empire.
Massive stone walls, bastions, and defensive towers follow the steep ridges of the hilltop, creating a dramatic silhouette above the town. Visitors who climb the long staircase leading to the fortress are rewarded with sweeping views across Nafplio and the surrounding coastline.
Palamidi remains one of the most impressive fortifications in Greece.
