Ollantaytambo

Ollantaytambo – Sacred Valley, Peru

The historic town of Ollantaytambo lies in the heart of the Sacred Valley northwest of Cusco. Built by the Inca Empire, Ollantaytambo served as both a ceremonial center and a strategic fortress guarding the entrance to the valley.

Massive stone terraces climb the steep mountainsides above the town, forming part of the impressive Ollantaytambo Archaeological Site. These terraces and temple structures illustrate the remarkable engineering skills of the Inca civilization.

Today the town preserves much of its original Inca street layout, making Ollantaytambo one of the most historically intact settlements in the Andes.
