Meknes – Morocco
The imperial city of Meknes lies in northern Morocco between the fertile plains of the interior and the foothills of the Middle Atlas Mountains. Founded in the 11th century and greatly expanded in the late 17th century by Sultan Moulay Ismail, Meknes became one of Morocco’s great imperial capitals.
The city is known for its monumental gates, long defensive walls, and vast royal precincts that reflect the ambitions of Moulay Ismail’s reign. Historic squares, granaries, and palaces illustrate the scale of royal construction that transformed Meknes into a powerful political center.
Today the historic city remains one of Morocco’s most important cultural landmarks and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
