Lecce – Apulia, Italy
The historic city of Lecce is often called the “Florence of the South” because of its remarkable concentration of Baroque architecture. Located in the region of Apulia in southern Italy, Lecce flourished during the 17th century, when local artisans developed a highly decorative architectural style.
Churches, palaces, and civic buildings throughout the city are carved from the soft local limestone, allowing sculptors to create intricate façades filled with floral patterns, saints, and mythological figures.
Today Lecce remains one of the most beautiful historic cities in southern Italy and a showcase of Baroque artistry.
