Hohensalzburg Fortress (Festung Hohensalzburg or literally ‘High Salzburg Fortress’) sits at the top of the Festungsberg. It is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe and sits at an altitude of 506 meters. Construction of the fortress began in 1077. In the Holy Roman Empire, the archbishops of Salzburg expanded the fortress to protect their interests.
