Corfu

Corfu – Greece

The historic island of Corfu lies off the northwestern coast of mainland Greece near the entrance to the Adriatic Sea. Its strategic position made the island an important center of trade and defense throughout Mediterranean history.

For several centuries Corfu was governed by the Venetian Republic, which constructed impressive fortifications and shaped much of the island’s architectural character. The historic center of Corfu still preserves elegant Venetian buildings, narrow streets, and imposing fortresses overlooking the harbor.

Today the old town of Corfu is recognized as a Old Town of Corfu, reflecting the island’s unique blend of Greek and Venetian heritage.
