Jesuit Church, Lucerne
Jesuit Church – Lucerne, Switzerland
The Jesuit Church (Jesuitenkirche) stands along the banks of the Reuss River in the historic center of Lucerne. Built in the 17th century, it is considered the first large Baroque church constructed in Switzerland.
The church was built for the Jesuit order, which played an important role in the Catholic Counter-Reformation in the region. Its graceful twin towers and richly decorated interior contrast with the more austere Gothic architecture found elsewhere in the city.
Located beside the river near Lucerne’s historic bridges and old town streets, the church forms one of the most distinctive landmarks of the city’s skyline.
