Noto – Sicily, Italy
The city of Noto is widely regarded as the masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque architecture. After the earthquake of 1693, the city was rebuilt on a new site using a carefully planned urban design of grand avenues and monumental churches.
Buildings constructed from warm golden limestone give the city its distinctive glow, particularly in the late afternoon sunlight. The sweeping staircases, elaborate façades, and richly decorated balconies reflect the artistic creativity of the Baroque period.
Today Noto is recognized as part of the Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto, preserving one of the most remarkable architectural ensembles in Italy.
