Malta Harbors – Malta

The historic harbors of Malta have long served as one of the most strategic maritime locations in the Mediterranean Sea. The natural harbors surrounding the capital city of Valletta provided safe anchorage for fleets and became central to the island’s long naval history.

For centuries the harbors were defended by massive fortifications constructed by the Knights Hospitaller, who ruled the island beginning in the 16th century. These defensive walls and bastions still dominate the waterfront landscape.

Today the harbors remain one of the most dramatic historic maritime settings in the Mediterranean.
