Amman – Jordan
Amman, the capital of Jordan, lies among a series of hills in the northwestern part of the country. The city has been inhabited for thousands of years and was known in ancient times as Philadelphia, one of the cities of the Roman Decapolis.
The historic center of Amman contains several remarkable archaeological sites, including the Roman Theater, carved into the hillside during the 2nd century AD, and the Citadel Hill, where the remains of Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic structures overlook the modern city.
Today Amman blends ancient ruins with a rapidly growing modern city, serving as the cultural and political heart of Jordan.
