UNESCO: Medina of Tunis

Medina of Tunis – Tunisia

The historic Medina of Tunis forms the ancient heart of Tunis. Established more than a thousand years ago, the medina developed as a thriving center of commerce, religion, and scholarship in the medieval Islamic world.

Within its walls lies a maze of narrow streets, markets, mosques, madrasas, and traditional houses that reflect centuries of architectural and cultural development. The medina contains hundreds of historic monuments, including the Great Mosque of Zitouna, one of the most important religious institutions in North Africa.

Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Medina of Tunis remains one of the most remarkable historic urban landscapes of the Mediterranean.
