Algiers Casbah

UNESCO: Kasbah of Algiers

Casbah of Algiers – Algiers, Algeria

The historic Casbah of Algiers forms the ancient heart of the city, rising above the harbor in a maze of narrow streets and whitewashed buildings. Built largely during the Ottoman period, the district contains traditional houses, mosques, and small courtyards connected by steep winding alleys.

For centuries the Casbah served as the political and commercial center of Algiers. Its distinctive architecture reflects the urban traditions of North African Islamic cities.

Today the Casbah is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, preserving one of the most important historic urban landscapes in the Mediterranean region.
