UNESCO: Wartburg Castle

Wartburg Castle – Eisenach, Germany

Wartburg Castle rises above the town of Eisenach on a forested hill in the region of Thuringia in central Germany. Founded in the 11th century, the castle became one of the most important strongholds of the Landgraves of Thuringia.

The castle is closely associated with several important moments in German history. In the early 16th century, Martin Luther took refuge at Wartburg Castle after the Diet of Worms, where he translated the New Testament into German, helping shape the development of the German language.

Today Wartburg Castle is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains one of the most historically significant castles in Germany.
