San Marino – Republic of San Marino
The tiny republic of San Marino sits atop the rugged slopes of Mount Titano in northeastern Italy. Founded according to tradition in the 4th century, San Marino claims to be one of the oldest republics in the world.
The medieval city perched on the mountain ridge is surrounded by defensive walls and towers that overlook the surrounding countryside. Narrow streets, stone buildings, and historic fortifications preserve the atmosphere of a small independent state that has survived for centuries.
Because of its extraordinary historical significance and preservation, the historic center of San Marino and Mount Titano are recognized as a Historic Centre of San Marino and Mount Titano.
