Iquitos – Peru
The river city of Iquitos stands along the banks of the Amazon River deep within the rainforest of northeastern Peru. With a population of more than half a million people, Iquitos is the largest city in the world inaccessible by road, reachable only by boat or airplane.
During the late 19th century rubber boom, Iquitos became a wealthy trading center, and many historic buildings from that era still stand in the city center. Today the city serves as the primary gateway for travelers entering the surrounding Amazon rainforest.
Iquitos combines urban life with the unique atmosphere of a city surrounded entirely by jungle.
