Fez – Morocco
The city of Fez is one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in Morocco. Founded in the 8th century, Fez developed into a major center of Islamic scholarship, craftsmanship, and trade across North Africa.
The city is best known for its vast medina, where narrow streets weave through markets, workshops, mosques, and traditional houses that have changed little over the centuries. Institutions such as the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University, founded in the 9th century, helped establish Fez as one of the most important intellectual centers of the Islamic world.
Today Fez remains a cultural heart of Morocco, where centuries-old traditions continue within one of the largest surviving medieval cities in the world.
Three pointed arches form a formal entrance at the end of a fortified courtyard or approach. Massive earthen walls and square crenellated towers rise on both sides, while the lighter-colored gate façade provides a ceremonial focal point. Cars and pedestrians introduce present-day scale to the otherwise imposing defensive architecture.

A woman in a white robe and red head covering walks along the roadside through rolling agricultural country outside Fes. Broad ochre fields, a darker orchard or grove, scattered buildings, and low hills extend behind her beneath a vivid blue sky, placing a solitary human figure within the region's cultivated landscape.
A tall square minaret faced with green decorative tilework rises above the dense rooftops of the Fes medina. Earthen buildings, palms, and smaller towers fill the foreground, while a sunlit upper district stretches across the hillside beyond. The telephoto composition layers religious architecture, residential fabric, and the city's uneven topography.
