Trier

Trier – Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

Trier lies along the Moselle River in western Germany and is one of the oldest cities in the country. Founded by the Romans more than two thousand years ago as Augusta Treverorum, the city became one of the most important administrative centers of the Roman Empire north of the Alps.

Several remarkable Roman monuments remain in Trier today, including the massive Porta Nigra, a well-preserved Roman city gate that still dominates the historic center. Other surviving structures include Roman baths, amphitheaters, and bridges.

These historic landmarks have earned Trier recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
