Meteora – Greece
The dramatic rock formations of Meteora rise abruptly from the plains of central Greece. Atop these towering sandstone pillars stand a series of historic monasteries built by Orthodox monks beginning in the 14th century.
Originally accessible only by rope ladders and baskets hoisted up the cliffs, the monasteries provided spiritual refuge and protection during periods of political instability. Today several of the monasteries remain active religious communities while others are open to visitors.
The unique landscape and architectural achievement of Meteora have earned the site recognition as a Meteora, making it one of the most extraordinary religious and natural landmarks in the world.
