UNESCO: Venice and its Lagoon

Doge’s Palace – Venice, Italy

The elegant Doge’s Palace stands beside St. Mark’s Basilica and served as the political center of the Venetian Republic for centuries. Built primarily during the 14th and 15th centuries, the palace combines Gothic architecture with ornate decorative details that reflect the wealth and power of Venice at its height.

Within the palace complex were the offices of government, courtrooms, and the private apartments of the Doge, the elected leader of the republic. Grand halls such as the Sala del Maggior Consiglio were decorated with vast paintings by Venetian masters including Tintoretto and Veronese.

Today the Doge’s Palace remains one of the most important historic monuments of Venice.
