Segesta – Sicily, Italy
The ancient site of Segesta lies among the rolling hills of western Sicily. Founded by the Elymians, an ancient people of the region, Segesta later came under strong Greek cultural influence.
The most famous monument at the site is the remarkably well-preserved Doric temple, constructed in the 5th century BCE. Standing alone on a hillside overlooking the surrounding countryside, the temple remains one of the most striking examples of classical Greek architecture in Sicily.
Nearby ruins and a hillside theater further illustrate the long history of the settlement.
