Dunnottar Castle

Dunnottar Castle – Scotland

The dramatic ruins of Dunnottar Castle stand atop a rugged cliff overlooking the North Sea near the town of Stonehaven. Surrounded on three sides by steep coastal cliffs, the castle occupies one of the most spectacular defensive locations in Scotland.

The fortress played an important role in Scottish history, most famously when the Honours of Scotland—the crown jewels of Scotland—were hidden here during the 17th century to protect them from the forces of Oliver Cromwell.

Today the atmospheric ruins of Dunnottar Castle remain one of the most iconic historic landmarks along Scotland’s northeastern coast.
