Plovdiv, Bulgaria

Plovdiv – Bulgaria

Plovdiv lies along the Maritsa River in southern Bulgaria at the meeting point of several important historical trade routes. The city is one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe, with origins stretching back to ancient Thracian times.

The historic old town occupies several hills rising above the modern city, where narrow cobbled streets wind between brightly colored Bulgarian Revival houses. One of Plovdiv’s most impressive landmarks is the Roman Amphitheater, built in the 1st century AD and remarkably preserved after being rediscovered during a landslide in the twentieth century.

From the hilltops of the old town, views extend across the Maritsa River valley toward the surrounding plains of southern Bulgaria.
