Basilica of San Zeno – Verona, Italy
The Basilica of San Zeno stands in the western part of Verona near the banks of the Adige River and is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in northern Italy. Dedicated to Saint Zeno, the patron saint of Verona, the church dates largely to the 11th and 12th centuries.
The façade is built of warm-colored stone and features a large circular rose window, often called the “Wheel of Fortune,” along with a series of sculpted relief panels surrounding the entrance. Bronze doors at the main portal display scenes from biblical stories and the life of Saint Zeno.
Inside the basilica are remarkable medieval frescoes and the celebrated altarpiece by Andrea Mantegna, one of the masterpieces of early Renaissance painting.
