Strasbourg lies along the Rhine River near the border between France and Germany in the historic region of Alsace. For centuries the city served as an important cultural and trading center linking the German and French worlds.
The historic district known as Grande Île, surrounded by branches of the Ill River, forms the medieval heart of the city. At its center stands the magnificent Strasbourg Cathedral, whose soaring Gothic tower once made it the tallest building in the world.
